There were long delays on train services between Bridgend and Swansea on Friday afternoon (December 9). The line was blocked as safety inspections of the track take place.
The Transport for Wales journey checker said that train services running to and from these stations may be cancelled, delayed by up to 120 minutes or suspended.
A rail replacement service was put in place for passengers as teams worked to fix the issue as quickly as possible.
A Network Rail spokesman said: “We discovered a damaged rail on the mainline between Swansea and Bridgend following a routine track safety inspection at 09:10 this morning (Friday 9 December).
“A 5mph speed restriction was put in place while the extent of the damage was investigated. The rail was beyond repair, and we had to close a section of the line to replace it. We worked as safely and quickly as possible to get rail services back up and running through the area.
“The line was handed back just after 13:30 for normal service to resume between Cardiff and Swansea.”
There were also delays at Cardiff Central on Friday morning because of a signalling issue.
It came on a busy day for the railway as many passengers head out for Christmas parties and events.
