Raiders rookies Tyree Wilson, Byron Young start camp sidelined with injuries

Today begins the first day of camp for the Raiders rookie class. And two of their top three picks were unable to take the field.

Tyree Wilson, who the team took at seventh overall in April’s draft begins camp on the Non-football injury list while third round DT Byron Young begins camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Wilson has been rehabbing from a foot injury he suffered last season at Texas Tech. It was hoped that he would be healthy enough to start camp on time, but that is clearly not the case.

Young’s situation is unknown at this time.

Team’s don’t draft players in the first three rounds they don’t expect to contribute right away, so being without these two is not good news.

The hope was Wilson would compete with veteran Chandler Jones for playing time. In addition, Wilson is considered a raw prospect whose development won’t really begin until he is healthy enough to practice.

Young comes in at an overall shaky position that could use all the competition it can get. He is expected to find a place in the rotation along with the likes of Bilal Nichols, Jerry Tillery, and John Jenkins.
