Raiders Make Jimmy Garoppolo Injury Decision Ahead of Sunday Game at Chargers

The Raiders will take the field for Week 4 without  Jimmy Garoppolo as the starting quarterback continue to recover from a concussion, the team announced Saturday.

With Garoppolo, who was evaluated for the injury after Week 3, still in concussion protocol, Las Vegas will turn to either 16-year veteran Brian Hoyer or rookie QB Aidan O’Connell to start against the Chargers

The team has not yet announced its decision at the time of publication.

Despite playing the entirety of Sunday’s 23–18 loss to the Steelers, Garoppolo’s status quickly came into question after he missed the post-game media session to be evaluated. Las Vegas subsequently placed him in the protocol on Monday, though the 31-year-old managed to log two limited practices after sitting out Wednesday.

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo won’t be available for the Raiders for their Week 4 game against the Chargers. Veteran QB Brian Hoyer or rookie QB Aidan O’Connell will get the nod.

As Garoppolo continues to work his way back, the Raiders (1–2) will now head into a pivotal contest against the Justin Herbert-led Chargers (1–2) in L.A. with either Hoyer or O’Connell, a fourth-round rookie out of Purdue, under center.

Hoyer, like Jimmy G, is also in his first season with the Raiders but is more familiar with the system due to his two stints playing under coach Josh McDaniels during his time with the Patriots. The 37-year-old journeyman has recorded 10,688 yards, 53 touchdowns and 35 interceptions across 77 career games (40 starts)
