Raiders have begun contract extension talks with QB Derek Carr

Now that the Raiders have officially traded for Davante Adams, they are set to make a run at the Super Bowl over the next few years. Leading the way will be Derek Carr, who is now joined with his former college teammate.

While there were some discussions and rumors this offseason that the Raiders would explore moving on from Carr, that is clearly not going to be the case with Adams in the fold. Carr is entering the final year of his contract in 2022, but that shouldn’t be the case for very much longer.

According to Vic Tafur of The Athletic, the Raiders have already begun contract talks with Carr. While there is no set date to get a deal done, the expectation is that one will be completed and signed before the start of the season.

Carr led the Raiders to the playoffs in 2021 as he set a career-high in passing yards (4,804). He was the unquestioned leader on the team after Jon Gruden resigned midway through the season.

Carr has significantly improved as a passer over the last three seasons, averaging 7.8 yards per attempt. That is quite an improvement since earlier in his career when he averaged just 6.7 yards per attempt from 2014 to 2018.

It remains to be seen how much money per year Carr will get from the Raiders, but the expectation is that it will be close to $40 million per season. That is the new going rate for quarterbacks as Dak Prescott and Matthew Stafford have recently signed similar deals.

Carr has a base salary of $19.777,519 in 202 with no guaranteed money left on his deal. Look for the Raiders to lower his current cap number ($19.8 million) and given him a big signing bonus over the next few months.
