Rahul Gandhi visits flood-hit Assam and strife-torn Manipur to meet affected people

Rahul Gandhi interacts with violence-hit Manipur people in relief camp in Assam

New Delhi: Congress MP and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi on Monday arrived in Assam and met flood-affected people living in relief camps while he was on his way to violence-hit Manipur.

This is his first visit to Northeast after becoming Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha.

Rahul Gandhi met flood-affected people in Cachar district before going to strife-torn Manipur.

The Congress leader arrived at Silchar airport where he was felicitated by Congress leaders from Assam and Manipur.

Rahul Gandhi visit to Assam comes as the state is fighting severe floods due to torrential rainfall, causing landslides and overflowing rivers.

Later in the day Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visits relief camps in three districts of Manipur including Jiribam, Churachandpur, and Moirang.

There he will interact with people displaced by the ethnic violence between the Meiteis and the Kuki-Zos, which began on May 3 last year.

Manipur has been witnessing ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki communities and over 200 people have died in clashes so far.

Rahul Gandhi is also scheduled to meet Governor Anusuiya Uikey in the Raj Bhavan.

The Congress leader day long visit to Manipur will end with a press conference at the State Congress office.  (with Agency inputs)
