Raheny Library to celebrate 50th birthday with family-friendly party

One of Dublin's most popular libraries is set to throw a party this weekend to celebrate its 50th birthday.

Raheny Library opened its doors to the public in 1972 and there's going to be great fun for all ages on Saturday September 10 to mark the special day. Built at a cost of £65,000 at the time it was second of a series of branch libraries built by Dublin Corporation in the 1970s, preceded by Dolphin’s Barn and followed by Ballymun.

It is most famous for being part of the much loved Irish movie "The Snapper" which was filmed there in 1993 and includes cameos from staff who were working there at the time. In the coming months Raheny will become the second branch to offer My Open Library. This service allows users who register, to access the branch from 8 am to 10 pm, 365 days a year.

There's plenty planned this weekend to mark the occasion. From 2pm to 4pm there'll be refreshments and entertainment provided by traditional musicians Comhaltas Craobh and Seán Treacy.

While Sarah Sparkles will entertain kids with her puppet friends and songs, rhymes and balloon modelling. All are welcome to come along to the special event for the community.
