Raheem Sterling confirms Man City exit ahead of Chelsea transfer

Raheem Sterling has referenced his 'ups and downs' as a Manchester City player in a farewell message ahead of his transfer to Chelsea.

Sterling has called time on his City career after 337 appearances, and he will join Chelsea this summer in a move costing around £50m. City have added Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez, meaning Sterling's chances of playing time would have been limited next season.

Confirming his City exit, Sterling said he is a stronger person for the harder periods of the last seven years, as he paid tribute to his teammates, coaches and supporters at the Etihad.

Writing on social media, Sterling said: "Seven seasons, eleven major trophies, a lifetime of memories.

"To the coaching staff who have played a massive role in my development over the years. To my teammates who have become more than just those I share a pitch with.

"To the backroom staff, to the office staff, to the fans who have tirelessly supported the team, and to everyone involved with Manchester City, my respect for you couldn't be greater. What a ride it's been.

"I am thankful for the ups and downs. It has been the downs that have, at times, tested my strength and resolve, and enabled me to stand here in front of you as the best possible version of myself.

"I arrived in Manchester a 20-year-old. Today, I leave as a man. Thank you for your endless support. It's been an honour to wear the shirt of Manchester City."

Sterling is expected to link up with his new Chelsea teammates in the USA for pre-season, with City following them to the states next week for their own friendly fixtures.
