Raging Edinburgh shopper claims Poundstretcher has hiked prices in 'unfair' deal

An Edinburgh woman has told how she popped in to her local Poundstretcher after seeing a half-price sale promo - only to find items had doubled in price.

Going for her weekly shop at the local bargain store, Lisa Elder ended up leaving empty-handed due to the shop's sudden price hike, despite the new promotional deals on offer.

The 38-year-old entered the store on Gorgie Road after seeing large “50% off everything when you spend £5” signs on the windows.

But she suspects bosses have simply bumped up their prices to absorb the half price offer.

The signs are plastered from top to bottom of the store's windows, promising customers 50 percent off their entire baskets at the checkout if they spend over £5.

Hoping for a bargain, Lisa said she scanned the shop only to realise that some of her regular purchases had risen in price.

A small three pack of kitchen roll is now on display at £7.99 but Lisa claims the price was not always this high.

She said, “The first thing I saw was the three pack of kitchen rolls for £7.99, which I have previously bought many times before for about £3.

“Walking further into the store I noticed a tube of Colgate was £3.49, again much more expensive than I have paid previously.”

In the current cost of living crisis Lisa was left feeling disappointed at the store’s price policy.

She added, “I’m a carer for my husband while also working part time, we have two children and are currently living right on the breadline.

“It would've been great to be able to do a big shop with that 50% off deal, I just think it's unfair in the current climate.”

She claims she put down her basket and walked out after talking to the manager of the store who directed her to email the head office with her concerns.

Edinburgh Live visited the store to find “50% off” signs dotted around - along with hefty price tags on many items.

The £7.99 kitchen roll seems can be much cheaper elsewhere - the three pack is only £3.69 at another bargain store, The Range.

A large box of 110 Finish dishwasher tablets, meanwhile was priced at £17.49 without the 50 percent discount.

While with the discount the box may seem a bargain, rival store B&M is selling the exact same tablets at £8.99.

With the discount the Poundstretcher product would cost about the same as the original priced B&M tablets.

Edinburgh Live has approached Poundstretcher for comment.
