Raging Edinburgh locals wake to bikes set on fire outside homes in quiet street

Feckless firebugs have been slammed for torching bikes in a city street.

Neighbours woke to the charred remains of the cycles in Lochend this week.

Multiple bikes were wrecked with firefighters scrambled to the car park blaze in a quiet neighbourhood in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.

“This was very close to where I live. The photo is the view from my second floor flat,” a nearby 32-year-old accountant said.

“I’m worried that it could have been much worse. If it had spread to the nearby cars it could have become a much worse fire.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed that emergency services responded to a fire in a car park on Dalgety Road just after midnight on Tuesday morning.

Emergency services attended and Police said enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire.

The 32-year-old local said that the street around Marionville Apartments is usually a quiet area. He could not recall any instances of arson or vandalism previously. However, he wondered if foul play might be involved in this particular incident.

He said he did not see when the fire began, but he had heard the brigade arrive on scene and put it out.

In the photograph taken from the man’s flat, three peddle bikes and one motorised bike can be seen strewn against a fire damaged wall. Two cars can be seen within a few meters of the scene. At least three of the bikes appear to be severely damaged.

Anyone with information about this incident should contact Police Scotland.
