2010 Wimbledon champion, beat Tomas Berdych 6-3, 7-5, 6-4

Having knocked out Andy Murray in the semi-final in straight sets, he then delivered the same result against Berdych, taking two hours and 13 minutes to win his second Wimbledon title. He was at the height of his game, with Wimbledon sandwiched between victories at Roland Garros and Flushing Meadows.

2011 Losing finalist, beaten by Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3

Djokovic had lost five grand slam meetings to Nadal but the pace and accuracy of his groundstrokes saw the Serb claim his first Wimbledon title. Nadal had not lost a grand slam final that he had contested since 2007 but he was far from his best, the third set aside.

2012 Lost in second round, beaten by Lukas Rosol 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4

In one of the biggest shocks in the tournament’s history, the 6ft 5in Czech, playing at Wimbledon for the first time and ranked No100 in the world, prevailed on day four. Nadal lacked spark in a five-set thriller.

2013 Lost in first round, beaten by Steve Darcis 7-6, 7-6, 6-4

Another year, another shock, this time leading to an even earlier exit at the hands of the world No135. Belgian Darcis won in three sets with Nadal playing his first competitive game on grass since his defeat by Rosol and clearly struggling to adjust from the clay of Roland Garros where he had won the title.

2014 Lost in fourth round, beaten by Nick Kyrgios 7-6, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3

Nadal did not play badly – making 44 winners and only 18 unforced errors – but came up against an inspired Kyrgios. The 19-year-old Australian, ranked No144 in the world striking 37 aces and 70 winners on his way to victory and a quarter-final spot on his Wimbledon debut.
