Rafael Nadal has joined Formula 1 star Sergio Perez in becoming a team owner in the newly introduced all-electric raceboat championship. The competition has been sanctioned by the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM), under the name E1 UIM boat racing series.
The tennis legend has made the dive to take ownership of the Team Spain setup in the series' inaugural campaign that kicks off later this year. He joins another sporting star in Red Bull's Perez in getting involved.
Perez - who finished third in the F1 drivers' standings in 2022 - will also represent his native country, by taking over Team Mexico for the 2023 season.
Following the news, the Red Bull man had a welcoming message for his new-found rival. He said: "Hola Rafa! It’s Checo Perez. It is great to hear that you are joining the (UIM) E1 World Championship with Team Spain.
“I know you have 22 Grand Slams, but let’s see who is the champion of the water in E1 . Vamos!” Nadal was quick to respond to the Mexican, wishing him the best of luck for the new season. He commented: "Checo! Your car is very fast but I as you know I’m from an island, so the water controls how far I can go!
"I’m always waiting for the races and it’s been real pleasure getting to know you. See you soon, a warm embrace and good luck with everything.” Nadal's team will sport a yellow livery, matching his iconic tennis racket.
Speaking about his venture, the 22-time Grand Slam winner revealed: "I love boats, I love competition and at the same time I know the E1 (UIM) World Championship will help electric technology in the nautical world, so very excited about that.

“At the same time, I am a competitor. I know it’s going to be a worldwide competition between great teams, so I am excited to be part of [it]. And on the other hand, I know the tour around the world will help oceans to restore and protect the biodiversity.
“I know all around, around all the races there are going to be programmes to protect and to restore marine eco-systems. Something that’s super interesting – and especially because I love the ocean, so I’ll be able to be part of something that important, makes me feel so happy.”
