RAF jets scrambled to civilian aircraft off Scottish coast over mid-air alert

RAF Lossiemouth jets were launched yesterday after a civilian aircraft failed to respond to air traffic control (ATC).

The base has confirmed that Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) Typhoons were involved and were dispatched to just off the Scottish coast.

In a brief statement, the RAF said: “We can confirm that RAF Quick Reaction Alert Typhoons were scrambled from RAF Lossiemouth today after a civilian aircraft failed to make contact with air traffic control.”

The incident triggered a standard QRA response, a routine but rapid measure designed to ensure UK airspace security.

Communications were eventually re-established between the plane and ATC.

No further action was required.
