RAF Hercules spotted in Scots skies with fighter jets on farewell flight

Scots watched on as three RAF Hercules planes flew over the country today to mark the aircraft's retirement from service.

The trio of C-130s left Brize Norton at 10am on Wednesday morning, and passed over Northern Ireland before arriving at RAF in Moray at around 1pm.

The transport aircraft and Number 47 Squadron will be stood down officially on June 30, with the plane replaced by the Atlas A400, after serving the RAF since the 1960s.

Well-wishers across Scotland stood outside hoping to catch a glimpse of the Hercules flypast, escorted by Typhoon fighter jets.

Brian Macdonald, from Lossiemouth, managed to capture footage of the moment the squadron flew overhead on the journey back down to England.

Since entering service Hercules has operated across the globe in support of UK military and humanitarian relief operations, including evacuating over 2000 Embassy staff and British passport holders from Sudan in April and May of this year.

Anne, Princess Royal, attended the stand down parade of the Number 47 Squadron earlier this week.

Past and current members of the Squadron also attended the royal parade to mark their proud history.

Wing Commander James Sjoberg, Officer Commanding No. 47 Squadron said:

“It is a great honour to command 47 Squadron at this historic moment.

"I am extremely proud of the people on my Squadron and across the wider Hercules family – they have delivered time and again on operations.

"I wish to pay tribute to them, and their families, for their exceptional contribution to UK Defence.

"Whilst the retirement of the Hercules and the laying-up of the 47 Squadron standard is a sad moment for many of us, I have full confidence that the people of the RAF Air Mobility Force will continue to deliver excellence around the globe.”
