The RAF has explained why people in an area of Nottinghamshire saw low-flying aircraft overhead on Wednesday night (September 7). Residents in the Bingham and Upper Saxondale area reported seeing and hearing two large military helicopters at a low altitude at around 8.30pm.
When approached by Nottinghamshire Live, the RAF said chinook helicopters had been travelling across the Midlands for training. A spokesperson said: "RAF Chinooks, from RAF Odiham, Hampshire, have been transiting across the Midlands on the way to completing a variety of routine operational training with ground based units."
The Ministry of Defence website states that Nottinghamshire will be affected by low flying aircraft at night due to Exercise Chameleon. Chinook helicopter crews use a variety of training areas around the UK for training and vary their routes and training locations to maximise training benefit. The RAF says it enables its crews to train in varied environments in preparation for operations across the globe.
