Bayern Munich are trying to hijack Tottenham's move for Genoa centre-half Radu Dragusin, in a move which could also impact Eric Dier's chances of joining the Bundesliga champions.
Spurs have been locked in talks with Genoa over a deal for the 21-year-old defender but are yet to meet the Italian club's asking price, believed to be in the region of £21m to £25million.
Bayern have now also opened negotiations with Genoa over a deal for Dragusin, although the Bavarian club have not agreed a fee either.
Dragusin favours a move to the Premier League over Genoa's Serie A rivals Napoli, who made a player-plus-cash offer at the end of last week, but is thought to be open to joining either Bayern or Spurs this month, with the player expecting clarity on his future this week.
Reports in Germany on Monday night suggested Spurs remain ahead of Bayern in the race for the Romania international.
Bayern beating Spurs to the signing of Dragusin may also have implications for Dier's chances of joining former teammate Harry Kane in Bavaria.
Dier is thought to have agreed personal terms with Bayern last week but is waiting for the German club to green light a dream move, as they assess different options at centre-half.
Spurs have made signing a new centre-half a top priority this month and head coach Ange Postecoglou has called for the club to do their business early in the month.
They also hold an interest in Nice's Jean-Clair Todibo but the Ligue 1 club are eager to hang on to the France international until the summer, and have discussed a number of players at rival Premier League clubs.
