Radio presenter says England should win World Cup group 'at a canter' and Wales have worse side now than 2016

talkSPORT presenter Alex Crook has dismissed Wales' chances of upsetting England at the upcoming World Cup and claims Gareth Southgate's side should win Group B 'at a canter' in Qatar.

Wales ended a 64-year absence from football's biggest party with a 1-0 win over Ukraine in Sunday's play-off final at Cardiff City Stadium, and will now take their place alongside the Three Lions, as well as Iran and the USA.

It means Wales will once again take on their most bitter rivals in a major tournament, six years after facing them in France at Euro 2016. On that occasion, a late double condemned Chris Coleman's side to a 2-1 defeat, although it was admittedly a result that was quickly forgotten due to a magical run to the semi-finals.

Rob Page's men may well fancy their chances of avenging that defeat, but Crook believes England should prove too strong for the men in red, claiming Wales (and star man Gareth Bale) are not as good a side as the class of 2016.

"He's not the force he was, Gareth Bale and when you look at this group, England should win it at a canter," he said

"Iran, USA and Wales. That is as easy a group as you can get because this Wales team, despite how much we've been lauding them for what they achieved yesterday, I don't think is as good a team as England faced in 2016.

"Gareth Bale was at the peak of his powers back then. Aaron Ramsey was much fitter and much sharper. They had people like Ashley Williams at the back. You look at the squad now, there's a lot of players playing outside the Premier League."

It's not the first time talkSPORT have been dismissive of Welsh football. Back in 2011, they posted an infamous entry on their social media channels, which read: "Wales are now ranked below the Faroe Islands in 112th place in the latest FIFA rankings, meaning they'll be in the bottom pot of seeds for this Saturday's 2014 World Cup draw.

"With the GB Olympic football team debate still going strong, is it time for Wales to admit they will never qualify for a major tournament and pool resources with England and Scotland?"

Wales take on the USA in their opening game of the tournament in Qatar on November 21, before then facing Iran four days later. They take on England at the Al Rayyan Stadium on November 29.
