Radio Flyer's Tesla-themed Cyberquad ATV makes comeback

If at first you don't succeed, redesign your product.

Back in December 2021, Radio Flyer's Model 914 Cyberquad for Kids was flying high.

The toy company best known for its iconic red wagon said the Cyberquad, an homage to the electric vehicle maker's Cybertruck, "sold out in minutes."

But then things went south.

In 2022, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Radio Flyer, was recalling the Cyberquad due to violation of federal youth ATV safety standards.

“The Cyberquad fails to comply with the federal mandatory safety standard requirements for youth ATVs, including mechanical suspension and maximum tire pressure,” the commission said in its recall notice.

Revised warning label

At the time, the commission said that Radio Flyer had received one report of an incident where the single-rider Cyberquad tipped over when driven by an eight-year-old child and a 36-year-old adult female, resulting in a bruised left shoulder to the adult female.

The recall order was dated Oct. 27, the same day Tesla (TSLA) -) CEO Elon Musk tweeted the fateful words "The bird is free" to let the world know that he had finalized his acquisition of Twitter — now known as X — after a six-month struggle.

Roughly 5,000 units of the Cyberquad for Kids had been sold, the CPSC said.

So it was back to the drawing board, and on Nov. 14, Radio Flyer launched the Model 915 Cyberquad for Kids, an updated version of the Model 914 — and just in time for the holidays.

The latest version of the battery powered ride-on toy includes several product updates to deliver the best experience for riders, meeting all Consumer Product Safety Commission requirements and ASTM F963 Toy Safety Standards.

These updates include replacing the rear spring with a steel tube with rubber-coated metal inserts that secures the rear frame to the main frame; an updated age grade of 9-12 years old; a revised warning label applied to the front left fender and a warning label that states that the product is not for off-road use and is not a youth ATV.

Updating new model

There is also a tire inflation warning label applied to the front left fender.

"Our award-winning product development team has worked closely with the Tesla Design Studio to update this new model, which we know has been highly anticipated by our customers," Robert Pasin, Radio Flyer's Chief Wagon Officer, said in a statement.

The new and improved ride-on features the same sturdy steel frame, high-pressure rubber air tires, a 500-watt motor with a max speed of 10 MPH, and Radio Flyer's Flight Speed Lithium-Ion battery technology, which the company said provides the longest run time and fastest recharge time compared with other products on the market.

The Cyberquad for Kids by Radio Flyer Model 915 is available for purchase now exclusively on the Tesla Shop while supplies last and is listed for $1,900.

A version of the Cyberquad for Kids went on sale in China earlier this year, which was priced at 11,990 Yuan, or roughly $1,700.

As for the Cybertruck, deliveries of the long-awaited luxury EV SUV will begin to select customers starting Nov. 30, before the vehicle enters full production next year at its Texas Gigafactory.
