Radio 4 tips horse ‘Seymour Cox’ in hilarious slip-up and listeners can’t get enough

BBC Radio 4 always seems one of the more dignified shows on the radio, but not today when a presenter offered a slightly crude horse racing tip – by accident, it appears.

Speaking at around 6.30am, the presenter Garry Richardson gave an update on latest football scores, before letting listeners know who he backed to win races taking place at Haydock Park Racecourse today in Merseyside, and his pick wasn’t PG.

He said: “Here are the selections: we’ve picked out two for Haydock – at 20 minutes to 1 it’s number 8, Seymour Cox, and then Haydock at 1.15 it’s number 7, Ned Tanner.”

It seems that Richardson suffered from an unfortunate mix up as Racing Post lists no horses named Seymour Cox participating in races today at the competition. It does however, name the horse Seymour Sox (not Cox) who is running at 12.40.

And, in the 7.30am sports bulletin – clearly having realised his error – Richardson correctly called the horse Seymour Sox.

Bet 365 gives odds of 11/2 that the horse will win big, as it races against Niceandeasy, One Fer Mamma, Macho Mover and O’Hanrahan Bridge as its main competitors.

Reacting to the presenter giving it an unwelcome name change. people thought the slip of the tongue was pretty funny:

It comes days after another Radio 4 issue in which the channel went off air due to an alarm in the building on Monday and was briefly replaced by a documentary about t-shirts.

Happens to the best of us. We look forward to seeing the BBC announce that Mike Oxlong is competing in the Grand National.
