Radio 2 unveils new line-up after major stars leave - including Scott Mills start date

The BBC has unveiled its new line-up of DJs to repair the holes left in Radio 2 after a host of its major stars left.

Scott Mills will launch his new weekday afternoon show, taking over from Steve Wright who broadcast his last show last week after 23 years on the airwaves.

Resident BBC DJ Scott left Radio 1 after 24 years last month. He will launch his new afternoon show on Halloween.

Ahead of his new show's launch, Scott said he's looking forward to his "brand new era" in his "new home".

He explained: "In an attempt to scare me even more, the bosses have decided my very first show is on Halloween! Join me every day for the best music and let’s switch off from the world for a couple of hours and have a laugh.”

Owain Wyn Evans has been announced as the presenter for the Early Breakfast Show, replacing Vanessa Feltz, and will start in January.

The show will be broadcast from the BBC Cymru Wales broadcast centre in Cardiff as the first Radio 2 show to move out of London in part of the Beeb’s Across The UK plan - allowing the broadcaster to "better reflect, represent and serve" all parts of the country.

Owain, who has been a familiar voice on Radio Cymru and has been a TV and radio presenter for over 20 years, said the new gig is a dream come true. He said: “When I asked my parents for a pair of turntables and a mixing desk from a DJ shop in Llanelli when I was 13 I never allowed myself to dream that one day I'd have my own show on Radio 2!

“I can’t wait to help kick start the day on Early Breakfast live from Cardiff. Bore da dahlings as we say in Wales!”

The radio station hit headlines earlier this year as a bloodbath emerged with a number of stars leaving the popular channel.

Steve Wright was the afternoon host on Radio 2 for 24 years (TWITTER)

Paul O'Grady announced he was leaving his show after 14 years in August in news which devastated his fans.

He was not alone in jumping ship. In a seismic shake-up, Celebrity Big Brother star Vanessa Feltz quit, leaving both her Radio 2 Early Breakfast and her BBC Radio London Breakfast Show (7am-10am) after nearly 20 years.

Steve Wright, 67, bid farewell to Wright in the Afternoon, which was broadcast each weekday from 2-5pm, at the end of September.

He will be replaced by Scott Mills, 49, who will host a brand new show from 2-4pm, launching on October 31.

Craig Charles' House Party - which aired on Saturdays from 10pm–midnight – has also been axed after the Red Dwarf star presented it since 2014.

Scissor Sisters’ star Ana Matronic’s early hours Sunday show Dance Devotion and Dr Rangan Chatterjee’s late-night Sunday show were also on the chopping block.
