Radio 1 DJ Adele Roberts shares first cancer symptoms in health update on ITV Lorraine

Radio 1 DJ Adele Roberts was praised by fans after sharing a bowel cancer update on ITV's Lorraine.

The 42-year-old presenter announced that she had been diagnosed with bowel cancer back in October last year and was receiving treatment. This included surgery to remove the tumour and more recently chemotherapy, with the Big Brother star having been open about her experience since being diagnosed.

She appeared on ITV's Lorraine on Thursday morning to talk about her diagnosis and the first symptoms she experienced, the Mirror Online reports. April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and aims to raise awareness of the condition which is the fourth most common cancer in the country with more than 42,000 new cases diagnosed in the UK every year.

Sitting in the studio alongside partner Kate Holderness, 37, Adele said: "It was stage two and about to be stage three. It was nearly spreading to my liver, but they got it in time. I'm on chemotherapy at the moment and I'm living my life to the full now."

Lorraine asked: "Obviously having Kate by your side is hugely important. Could you both talk about everything that was going on? You could share that?"

Adele replied: "When I first started to notice mucus when I would go to the toilet and then it was blood I would notice. I was speaking to Kate about it and at first we thought it was because I eat a lot of kale.

"I just didn't have cancer on my radar. I thought it could be IBS, but when it started to get more regular, Kate said you need to call the doctor."

This comes after Adele said that her "lifestyle choices" have helped with recovery, with her encouraging fans to have balance in their lives.

Adele wrote in a post on Instagram last month that her cancer had been growing for a decade and said that her decision to change her "poor diet" a few years ago had benefited her recovery.

The I'm a Celebrity star told her 172,000 followers: "I was told it took about 10 years for my bowel cancer to grow."

Adele admitted that she "didn't start getting healthier" until around 2016, when she did a documentary for Radio 1, adding: "Before that I had a poor diet and was clinically obese."

The radio DJ said that the "main message" she wanted to get across is that people should "take care" of themselves, encouraging them to "try and have balance in your life."

She concluded the recent post on social media: "I truly believe my new lifestyle choices have helped me recover quickly from surgery and deal with chemotherapy."

The broadcaster is said to have undergone a weight loss regime in around 2017, with her giving up sugar. She had lost two stone by the time she did I'm a Celebrity in 2019.

Fans took to Twitter following the interview to praise Adele for her bravery in speaking out about the condition.

One fan said: "Brilliant interview. You are so positive Adele. I'm trying hard to stay positive as I approach my 3rd chemo session. But its so hard. Well done you. You are such an inspiration. And what a beautiful couple you and Kate are."

Another said: "Just watched the beautiful, brave Adele Roberts on the Lorraine show talking about her bowel cancer. Inspirational woman. Love and prayers Adele."

A third added: "Well done @AdeleRoberts. Powerful interview this morning on ITV."

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV
