Radebe, Bremner, Hasselbaink - Select Leeds United's best World Cup XI from across the years

Amid a maelstrom of controversy and debate, the 2022 World Cup is finally underway. England begin their campaign on the back of a loss in the Euro 2020 final, while Leeds United fans will have a trio of Elland Road stars to cheer on.

Tyler Adams, Brenden Aaronson and Rasmus Kristensen are all present in Qatar, an improvement on the solitary Leeds player at the Russia World Cup in 2018, where Pontus Jansson was on the fringe of the Sweden starting XI.

Prior to that, you had to go way back to 2006 for Leeds United representation, when Eddie Lewis and Rui Marques were selected for the USA and Angola for the Germany tournament.

It's a far cry from tournaments of the past, when Leeds United would regularly have a number of players strutting their stuff on the biggest stage of all, which got us thinking: How would an all-time Leeds United World Cup XI look?

We've rounded up every Leeds star to turn out at a World Cup while an Elland Road player and put them in our team selector widget for you to chose a starting XI.

From a squad point of view, our pool isn't ideal as it's extremely defence-heavy, with very few midfield players to select from, but them's the breaks.

With that in mind, you can see the team we've chosen below which is a very nice mix of Revie-era legends, some '90s and 00s favourites and a couple of round pegs in square holes.

Between the sticks, Nigel Martyn was a straight-forward choice and we can call upon two of the club's greatest-ever centre-backs in Jack Charlton and Lucas Radebe. Terry Cooper and Gary Kelly are our full-backs and then in central midfield we've had to shoehorn Norman Hunter next to Billy Bremner, owning to lack of options.

Still, no-one will mess with those two.

The flanks also pose a problem or two, with Eddie Lewis the only real option on the left and we've put Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink on the right, hoping he can cut in and do damage. Perhaps Brenden Aaronson will stake a claim here in the coming days.

We're spoilt for choice up front, so select Leeds' all-time leading scorer Peter Lorimer and Allan Clarke, who made his England debut in the 1970 World Cup, scoring from the penalty spot against Czechoslovakia.

But who will make your XI?

Here's our side...

Now select yours...
