Radar to be installed in £5.6m scheme to protect coast

Radar is to be installed along the Sefton coast as part of a £5m plan given approval by the council's cabinet this week.

The proposals involve installing sensor systems along the Sefton coast in order to help monitor issues such as coastal erosion and flood risk management.

A report presented to a meeting of Sefton’s cabinet on Thursday, February 2, sought permission to begin a procurement process to purchase and install the equipment in various locations, including Ainsdale, Blundellsands, Birkdale, Southport and Bootle.

According to the report, a new supplier is required to help manage existing radar systems in the area as well as to establish a network with new ones.

The radar beacons could be fitted to existing lighting systems and would require small amounts of power, which could come from solar and wind sources, according to the report.

Sefton Council is the lead authority for the North West Regional Coastal Monitoring Programme and the funding for the contract comes from a £5.6m Energy Agency grant managed by the council on behalf of the north west maritime authorities.

Information will be collected on a range of measures including surface current and wave direction, tidal elevations and bird movements with work expected to start in May once the contract has been awarded, within initial costs of £1.5m and the option to be extended for a further three years.

Members of Sefton’s cabinet approved the report on Thursday, meaning the process of finding a contractor to carry out the work can now go ahead.
