'Racist' machete thugs rumbled for Giffnock attack after contact details spotted on getaway car

'Racist' machete thugs who robbed two teenagers in a leafy Glasgow suburb were rumbled after contact details were seen emblazoned across their Range Rover.

Bernard Larkin, 24, and Miley Doran, 26, targeted their victims, aged 19 and 15, in Giffnock, East Renfrewshire on September 8 last year. The crooks pulled over in a Range Rover before staring a conversation with the teens.

Prosecutor Leanne McQuillan said they hurled what was deemed to be a 'subtly racist' comment by asking, 'does your dad own a corner shop?'. The youngsters tried to flee the robbers but one demanded, 'f***ing money'.

Miss McQuillan said: "A third male exited the vehicle and brandished a rusty machete. One of the boys took a £20 from his rucksack and threw it onto the ground near the male, who picked it up and returned to the vehicle.

"Before the drove away, one of those in the vehicle was heard to say, 'this is what we do for a job, taking money off Asians'."

Police were soon alerted to what happened. CCTV managed to trace the Range Rover and that Larkin was the owner.

Both he and Doran were identified as being involved. They pled guilty on Thursday at the High Court in Glasgow to assault and robbery.

Doran's lawyer Tony Lenehan said: "He seeks neither to mitigate or justify the decision to rob two people. It was a works vehicle with ladders and contact details on the side, so identification was rather inevitable."

Larkin was on Thursday jailed for two years and nine months with Doran locked up for three years.

Lady Stacey told them: "What you did cannot be tolerated. Two young men were going about their business.

"You decided to stop your vehicle and, acting with someone else, robbed them."
