During his training career Stuart Edmunds is nine from 42 with his runners in first-time cheekpieces for a profit of £13.36 to a £1 level stake at SP and, since the beginning of this year, the score is six from ten (+£18.36). Anyone who saw Edna E Mode’s hurdles debut at Leicester last week will think she needs more than headgear if she’s to win this juvenile hurdle – she made a mistake at the first flight and then refused at the second – but she was very well backed and is worth a speculative interest at a big price.

BLACKACRE (system – Evan Williams, first-time cheekpieces, novices’ handicap chase)
Evan Williams is another trainer with a good record when using first-time cheekpieces, especially in novices’ handicap chase company. He’s scored with five of the 12 qualifiers for a profit of £30.83 to a £1 level stake at SP. Ten-race maiden BLACKACRE would have needed the experience when only sixth at Hereford on his chase debut 13 days ago and the much softer conditions will suit.
