Cheltenham Gold Cup contender Chantry House gives top owner JP McManus 4,000th win

Cheltenham Gold Cup contender Chantry House was a 4,000th winner for leading owner JP McManus.

The 5-6 favourite defeated Santini in a slow motion finish to the Paddy Power Cotswold Chase on Festival Trials Day.

The hard fought success for Nico de Boinville's mount made only a ripple in the Gold Cup market, with the sponsors offering 14-1 (from 16-1).

Chantry House was given a clean bill of health after being dismounted by his jockey, who walked back to the winners' enclosure alongside.

Trainer Nicky Henderson said: “It’s wonderful to train JP’s 4,000th winner and nothing gives me more pleasure than doing that and it’s lovely that it’s here in a proper race at Cheltenham.

“JP has been an amazing friend and supporter and nothing gives me more pleasure.

"We had AP’s 3,000th winner and nobody dreamt then that he’d get the 4,000th – while we’re trying to get to 3,000 at the moment.

“I’m very lucky and I’ve always said to everybody that I’ve the best team of owners that anybody could have. Yes, JP has the most horses and sends us some seriously nice horses and my job is to get them ready.”

McManus, the most successful owner at the Cheltenham Festival, won the 2012 Gold Cup with Synchronised.

Over the years his green and gold hoops have been carried by numerous top horses, including three-time Champion Hurdle hero Istabraq.

McManus, 70, won the Grand National in 2010 with Don't Push It, a first winner in the race for Sir Anthony McCoy.

He owns Minella Times, whose success last year was a first for a female jockey, with Rachael Blackmore in the saddle.
