Rachel Reeves caught lying on CV AGAIN about jobs at Bank of England and Halifax

CHANCELLOR Rachel Reeves lied about the amount of time she spent working for both the Bank of England and the Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS).

The Labour MP previously faced criticism – and was forced to edit her CV on the networking site LinkedIn – after she lied about being an economist at HBOS. In fact, she worked in retail banking, reportedly “running a small administrative complaints department that also dealt with IT matters”.

Now, the BBC has reported that she further lied about how long her employment lasted at HBOS. Reeves’s CV said she had worked with the bank until December 2009 – but she had actually left more than half a year earlier, in May 2009.

Reeves then spent one year out of employment, before being elected to Parliament in May 2010. The news comes despite her saying last year that she wanted a UK where people “who can work, will work”.

Further, Reeves’s CV claimed she had worked at the Bank of England from September 2000 to December 2006. However, she actually left nine months earlier, in March 2006, according to the BBC.

One year of her time at the bank was also spent studying, bringing her total time in employment there to roughly four-and-a-half years.

Regardless, Reeves has repeatedly rounded this up to a “decade”

"I spent a decade working as an economist at the Bank of England and loved it,” she said in 2021.

And in February 2024, she told the Labour Party Business Conference: "I spent the best part of a decade as an economist at the Bank of England."

In a comment reported by the BBC, Reeves’s spokesperson blamed an administrative error and claimed the Chancellor had not seen her CV before it was published.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesperson said the Labour leader had "no concerns whatsoever" about the Chancellor's conduct and has “full faith” in her.

Her use of expenses during her time working for HBOS was also subject to an internal investigation, according to the BBC, but a spokesperson for Reeves claimed she was not aware of the probe.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer (Image: PA Wire) A lawyer for the Chancellor, who is MP for Leeds West and Pudsey, has also said she was not subject to “allegations of wrongdoing or misconduct” during her career in retail banking.

Asked whether Reeves could be trusted on Thursday, the Prime Minister’s official spokesperson said: “Yes, the Chancellor is working with the whole of Cabinet to deliver the Plan for Change.

“Figures out this morning showed growth numbers coming in higher than expected… we’re still not satisfied with this level of growth, and that’s why we’re determined to go further and faster in delivering the economic growth and improvement to living standards that the country needs.”

Asked whether it would be right to say the Prime Minister does not have any concerns about Reeves’ conduct, the spokesperson said: “Correct.”
