Rachel Minaya Found Dead In New Jersey Home

Heavy fog hangs over New York City, as seen from Weehawken, New Jersey

Rachel Minaya, the wife of current New York Yankees executive and former New York Mets general manager Omar Minaya, was tragically found dead in her New Jersey home on Saturday. The cause of her death has been ruled out as suicide, according to a source close to the Minaya family. Omar Minaya was not present at home when the incident occurred. The couple leaves behind two sons, Justin and Teddy. Justin Minaya is currently pursuing a professional basketball career with the Portland Trail Blazers’ organization in the G League.

Omar and Rachel Minaya's love story began in 1989 when they met at a hair salon in New York City. Their relationship quickly blossomed, leading to their engagement within a year, as reported by a sports-based news outlet in 2007.

Omar Minaya's career in baseball started as a scout for the Texas Rangers before he transitioned to the New York Mets as an assistant general manager under Steve Phillips in the mid-1990s. During his tenure with the Mets, Minaya played a pivotal role in assembling a competitive team that contended for the World Series, featuring star players like Mike Piazza, Edgardo Alfonzo, and Al Leiter.

In 2002, Minaya took on the role of general manager for the Montreal Expos, where he spearheaded efforts to revitalize the team into an 80-win playoff contender. Despite his efforts, the Expos did not reach the postseason during his tenure. Subsequently, Minaya returned to the Mets as the general manager.

Minaya held the position of general manager for the Mets until the conclusion of the 2010 season, during which the team made one playoff appearance but fell short in the National League Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Following his time with the Mets, Minaya served as the senior vice president of baseball operations for the San Diego Padres until 2015. He later rejoined the Mets for a third stint from 2017 to 2022 before joining the New York Yankees as a special adviser in 2023.
