Aussie Olympic breaker Rachael ‘Raygun’ Gunn is facing backlash for allegedly going after a local comedy club for $10,000 in legal fees. You see, the iD Comedy Club in Sydney was supposed to host Stephanie Broadbridge’s parody show Raygun the Musical on December 7.
The show was canned after Raygun’s legal team sent iD Comedy Club owner Anthony Skinner a seven-page letter demanding the show be “immediately” cancelled due to copyright infringement.
Skinner has now revealed that Raygun’s lawyers have allegedly demanded a massive $10,000 from him for their legal fees. The show sold 70 tickets resulting in a profit of $500, which Skinner offered to pay the lawyers. However, his peace offering was “completely rejected”. It’s worth noting that the profits were intended to go to a local women’s shelter.
In an interview with the SMH, Skinner said the $10,000 cost would “come close to sending his business to the wall”.
“The average person has no idea about any of this stuff. It seems that they’re just sort of using that to their advantage and trying to get people to crumble. I think they think my comedy business is more successful than it is,” Skinner said.
An earlier legal letter sent to Skinner noted that the name “Raygun” itself is important, as it’s a significant brand and has become a “very valuable asset”.
“Our client’s choreography performed at the Olympics was the culmination of over 10 years of training, our client has spent significant time, effort and expense creating her choreography,” the letter states.
“You will recognise this Olympic level of choreography is a complex sequence of moves and techniques of which our client is the creator and author. Copyright subsists in this choreography as an artistic work.”
A verrrrry interesting take, seeing as Raygun was awarded zero points at the Paris Olympic Games 2024 by judges.
Skinner tells PEDESTRIAN.TV that, in his opinion, Raygun and her legal team are “stifling creativity and bullying creatives within the legal system”.
“They’re trying to (in my opinion) swindle $10,000 from me in ‘legal fees’ for sending this PDF,” he said. “I’ve dedicated my life to supporting artists and their careers, I’ll publicly fight for them all day, every day.”
It’ll be interesting to see what takes place next, surely Raygun needs a PR professional to step in ASAP!
