Rabbi Matondo has revealed he sought advice from a pair of former Rangers stars before moving to Ibrox. The winger was unveiled as Giovanni van Bronckhorst 's fourth summer signing on Tuesday as he joined from Schalke on a four-year deal.
Matondo was linked with a number of other clubs before committing to Rangers and was given the lowdown on what to expect by both Aaron Ramsey and Jermain Defoe. And he insisted the experienced pair had nothing but praise for the Ibrox club having both pulled on the jersey in recent seasons.
Matondo told Rangers TV: "I heard a bit from Aaron at Wales camp. He has high praise for the club and how everything is here. I've heard from elsewhere like Jermain Defoe. He's told me about it. Big names in the game have been here and experienced it so it's only right I give it a chance myself and make great memories here."
The 21-year-old watched closely as Van Bronckhorst's side reached last season's Europa League Final, only to lose out in an agonising penalty shoot-out against Eintracht Frankfurt. And the Wales international admitted the lure of more continental adventures played a significant role in his decision to choose Glasgow.
He said: "I've come here knowing that the club will play in Europe every year so that's a big attraction so I've come here hoping to play in those big games." Matondo immediately joined Van Bronckhorst's squad for pre-season training have made a start on preparations before departing Schalke. And he added: "I have been training for a week in Germany. I'm in a good way.
"I still have a bit more to get to so I will do that and will do anything that needs to be done before the league starts. I'm looking forward to it."
