Rabbi Matondo 'close' to Rangers transfer as Ibrox side set to beat French rivals to £1.8 million deal

Rangers are “close” to signing Welsh winger Rabbi Matondo for a fee in the region of £1.8 million, according to a report in France.

The 21-year-old is set to leave German side Schalke - where he was loaned out to Belgian side Cercle Brugge last season - with French Ligue 1 clubs Lorient and Troyes both reportedly chasing the player. However, it’s the Ibrox side who are said to be closing in on Matondo who is a former Cardiff City and Manchester City youth player.

If Giovanni van Bronckhorst wins the race for Matondo’s signature then he would join international team-mate Tom Lawrence at the Scottish Premiership side and become the third summer window signing and fourth new face to join up with Rangers. Lawrence followed Antonio Colak and John Souttar, who signed a pre-contract from Hearts in January.

Respected French outlet Goal France report: "Rabbi Matondo is close to signing with Glasgow Rangers for a sum close to 2 million euros. In Ligue 1, Lorient and Troyes have made offers for the player."

It comes after manager Van Bronckhorst admitted he would like to add extra quality to the final third after securing the services of Lawrence and Colak.

Speaking to the Rangers Review, he said: “We are still busy. I think a couple more, yes. We need that to be successful throughout the whole season. You saw last season that we were lacking a little bit of depth up front with the strikers that we lost.

“I don’t want to come into another situation where I have to play someone like Joe as a striker. Just prepared for everything that can happen to this club and then still have quality. Yes, more in the attacking positions is that aim.”
