An 'R' driver was caught going nearly double the legal speed limit on a Northern Ireland this week, police said.

The new motorist was speeding at 83mph - 38mph over the legal speed limit for an 'R' driver.

Restricted drivers, or 'R' drivers for short, are required by law in Northern Ireland to not exceed a speed limit of 45mph for a period of one year.
In a social media post, Maydown Road Policing said: "Maydown Road Policing officers on patrol in Coleraine stopped this driver who was on R plates at 83mph. That 38mph over their speed limit.
"Young, inexperienced drivers are among our most vulnerable road users so please slow down."
