This week will be remembered for world-changing events ranging from India’s Moon landing to the reported death of Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin. But the image that may stick in many people’s heads is Donald Trump’s mugshot.
Trump became the first former US president to be immortalised by a police photographer after surrendering in Georgia on Thursday on more than a dozen charges related to his alleged bid to overthrow the state’s 2020 election results. He was released from an Atlanta jail after paying $200,000 (£160,000) in bail.
The would-be 2024 candidate turned himself in a day after appearing in a colourful interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson that was posted online minutes before the first Republican primary debate, which Trump skipped. Asked by Carlson how he stayed so cheerful despite being “indicted every week”, Trump replied that his standing in the opinion polls kept him upbeat.
The clock is ticking down to elections in a range of countries, including India and Indonesia, that could herald a new global order.
With the UK also likely to head to the polls in 2024, Rishi Sunak is reportedly planning to get aggressive on divisive issues including migration, eco-activism and trans rights. But with the Conservatives still trailing behind Labour in the polls, the prime minister has far less reason to be upbeat than Trump.

The Discalced Carmelite Nuns of Arlington said they “no longer recognise the authority” of Bishop Michael Olson, who they accuse of aggression and spiritual manipulation. The long-running row began when he accused their Mother Prioress of violating her vow of chastity by “sexting” a priest.
2. Heptathlon
Johnson-Thompson clinched her second World Championship title by running a personal best in the final 800-metre event on Sunday in Budapest. The victory marks a remarkable comeback for the 30-year-old, who suffered serious achilles tendon and calf injuries after winning gold in 2019.
3. Thailand
Former PM Thaksin Shinawatra was immediately detained and taken to court after landing in Bangkok on Tuesday. The telecoms tycoon-turned-populist politician, who fled corruption charges in 2006, was jailed for eight years.
4. Leonard Bernstein
The teaser trailer for “Maestro”, about the legendary creator of “West Side Story”, shows star Cooper wearing a prominent prosthetic nose. The actor, who also directed and co-produced the Netflix biopic, was accused of “Jewface” – when a non-Jewish actor plays a Jewish person and exaggerates so-called “Jewish” characteristics.

The three-day summit was billed as the most important in a decade for the Brics bloc, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Tensions have been mounting among the group, which together make up 40% of the world’s population, as China pushes for an expanded bloc to challenge the G7.

7. $11.3 trillion
The drop in global household wealth was the first since the 2008 financial crisis and heralds a “richcession”, according to commentators. The new research, by financial services firm UBS, also shows that the number of millionaires fell by 3.5 million year-on-year, to 59.4 million.
8. Cracking them on kids’ heads
The videos, many of which use the hashtag #eggprank, are getting millions of views, but many of the children look “upset and stunned”, said Sky News. Medical experts have also warned of the risk of salmonella.
