'Quite get the mentions' - Steve Clarke names Scotland role Liverpool's Andy Robertson has grown into

Scotland boss Steve Clarke made sure to highlight Andy Robertson's leadership following their 2-0 win over Armenia.

Just days after the loss to Ukraine which ended their 2022 World Cup hopes, Robertson led out his international team-mates in the UEFA Nations League group game and showed why he has been given the armband. Both on and off the pitch, the Liverpool left back was outstanding

It's been a tough few weeks for Robertson after missing out on the Premier League title on the last day of the season and then losing the UEFA Champions League final to Real Madrid, on top of missing out on the winter World Cup. But the 28-year-old didn't let that get in the way of leading by example and Clarke was keen to praise his captain after saying 'he doesn't quite get the mentions that maybe he should do.'

“It was important to refresh it and also important for the boys who played last week and had to go again," said Clarke. “I have to mention the captain, I thought he was outstanding.

“He was outstanding in the dressing room before the game, himself, John McGinn, Callum McGregor, leaders, taking us on the pitch in a good frame of mind and with three good performances. But I thought the captain was exceptional. It was just in general, as a captain, leader.

“It is a role that Andy has really grown into and sometimes he doesn’t quite get the mentions that maybe he should do.

“And captains are important at this time, people you are looking for to step up, John McGinn, Callum McGregor that was important as well.”

Scotland and Robertson are next in action this weekend when they take on Ireland in Dublin.
