Quirky upside-down Edinburgh airport hotel given green light by council

A new Edinburgh airport hotel with a unique design has been given the go-ahead by Edinburgh City Council planners.

The quirky design will see the hotel building flipped on its head with the front-of-house services situated on the top floor which will overlook the runway tarmac from its site at 4 East Mains.

Creos Property, who are constructing the hotel, say that they are keen to give guests an aerial view of the airport which will make the perfect location for plane spotters who are visiting or stopping off in the capital.

The upside down building will be run by Radisson Red and the structure will include eight floors of guest bedrooms along with the sky bar, according to Urban Realm.

Confirming their recommendation in a committee report, the chief planning officer wrote: "The site is a suitable sustainable location for the proposed development and the use is compatible with the character of the locality.

“The proposal is considered to provide due regard to global climate and nature crisis and will not result in an unreasonable loss of neighbouring residential amenity."

In a statement posted following the notice Creos wrote: "We've prioritised excellent design to ensure the hotel will create a new landmark building on a key entry route into Edinburgh.

“It will also deliver exceptional sustainability performance, economic benefits to the area and improvements to the public realm."

Construction is due to kick off during the summer of 2024.
