'Quick, strong, aggressive, can play' - Gary Cahill praises Liverpool defender

Former Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has lauded Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk claiming he's one of the best players in the world.

The Reds star has been an integral part of their success in recent seasons after being apart of the success during Jurgen Klopp's reign.

Van Dijk is widely considered as one of the best defenders in the world following his displays for Liverpool. Although, his form has dipped this season causing some fractions to take aim at the Dutchman.

Cahill has discussed his time playing against 31-year-old claiming he has all the attributes to be a good defender in Europe, as well as the Premier League.

“Massive player. Early on in his career, I remember playing against him. He was at Southampton, almost learning his way there," he said.

"Got his move to Liverpool. The rest speaks for itself, he’s obviously one of the best centre-backs in the world, I think. Seems a big character.”

“Quick, strong, aggressive, can play. Again, all the attributes you need to be a top player in European football, not just the Premier League.”

Accolades have been aplenty for the central defender during his time at Liverpool as well as team honours, he was named in the FIFA Best XI for last season.

"First and foremost proud, grateful, blessed, I can say a couple of things but those are the feelings that I have," said Van Dijk.

"It was an interesting year, we played all of the games and were competing for all trophies until the last game of the season. Very close, unfortunately couldn't get it done but very proud to be apart of this football club.

"I'm grateful and this is the biggest recognition you can get, voted for by your peers, by the players you play with and know what you go with day in, day out and play the same level. Proud."
