Queue to visit Queen may be shut as line hits 11 hour wait

Thousands of people have made the journey to Westminster Hall to pay their respects to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Westminster Hall has been open 24 hours a day, since Wednesday, for crowds to view the Queen's coffin. However, officials are warning the queue could be closed as it has now reached an 11-hour wait.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport said if the park reaches capacity, "entry to the queue will be paused".

In a tweet on Friday morning, the Government department said: "The queue is in Southwark Park. If the park reaches capacity, entry to the queue will be paused. If you have not yet set off to join, please consider waiting until numbers have reduced."

An earlier tweet, just after 8am, said the estimated queuing time was "at least 11.5 hours". Officials reportedly estimate that 350,000 people will be able to view the Queen’s coffin before the queue closes to mourners.

The Queen’s lying-in-state will end at 6.30am on Monday – the day of her funeral. The King will then once again lead his family in marching behind the Queen's coffin when it is moved, at 10.44am on Monday, from Westminster Hall to Westminster Abbey for the funeral service.
