Questions That HBO’s ‘Euphoria’ Needs To Answer In The Season 2 Finale

Zendaya stars in HBO's Euphoria as Rue. EDDY CHEN/HBO

The second season of HBO’s Euphoria has rapidly introduced important plot points and dropped them just as quickly; the finale (airing on Sunday) can’t possibly have time to answer all of the loose ends, but here are the main questions that have fans wondering.

Whatever happened to Cal?

Cal, Nate’s domineering dad, had one of the most interesting, and consistent, character journeys this season - who’d have thought the sex tape pervert from season one would have this much depth to him?

Cal’s unexpectedly sympathetic backstory explains his obsession with secretive sex - kind of. It doesn’t explain the worst of Cal’s behavior, but it did give him a bizarre moment of liberation, as he urinated on the floor of his own house and happily abandoned his family to embrace the full spectrum of his sexuality.

But now what? Did he go searching for his lost love, or is he just making more tapes?

Who is the third Jacobs child?

Perhaps this wasn’t a prominent enough question to answer, but a family photo of the Jacobs showed a mysterious third son who no one has yet acknowledged. There’s a prominent fan theory that the missing child was Fez’s adopted brother Ash, which is basely on nothing more than a very vague resemblance between the actors.

Really, there would be no other reason for this kind of big reveal other than pure drama. And to be fair, that’s the sole motivator for plot twists in Euphoria, so hey, it might be true.

Did Fez survive?

Fez, the internet’s favorite drug dealer, was reportedly supposed to die in the first season of Euphoria, but the creators of the show liked actor Angus Cloud enough to keep him around (good choice).

Last we saw, the police were closing in on him, and Ash is probably going to introduce some unhinged violence to the situation, as he does. Whatever happened between Fez, Ash and Faye, we do know that the former didn't make it to the play.

But is he alive, in jail, or merely delayed? Or did something happen to Ash?

When is Grandma Fez going to do something?

Grandma Fez was introduced like a character in a Martin Scorsese movie, but since that memorable sequence, she’s been quietly ill offscreen. Seems strange to introduce such a distinctive character and then not have her do anything at all - she might as well have died already if she’s just going to stay in the background, bedridden.

Surely Grandma has one last word of wisdom - or act of violence left in her - before her story is over.

What’s going to happen with the suitcase?

The suitcase full of drugs that Rue didn’t sell remains the biggest, darkest problem in the show, even though the last episode showed Rue not really thinking about that problem, momentarily distracted by Lexi’s passive-aggressive play.

But you can’t build up a McGuffin as consequential as the suitcase without a payoff - Rue might have escaped from Laurie’s house, but Laurie has made it clear that Rue will pay for the drugs, with her body or with her life.

Is the suitcase going to carry over into season 3, or will a solution present itself in the finale?

Are Rue and Jules really over?

The long-simmering romance between the two seemed over before it began, as Rue was lying the entire duration of their relationship, pretending to be sober while perpetually intoxicated. Then, Elliot befriended Jules and seduced her, pushing the two further apart than ever.

They deserve a fresh start, with a sober Rue and a more stable Jules, but will the show ever give it to them? And while we’re on the subject, are we ever going to get some satisfying closure with Elliot?

The guy basically threw a bomb into their lives and walked away from the smouldering wreckage, seemingly never looking back.

When will Nate lose control of the situation?

With Maddy traumatized by Nate’s pistol, Cal pushed out of the closet, Cassie completely under his thumb, and Cal’s sex tape destroyed by Jules, there’s nothing left to hurt Nate. Well, except the spectre of his own sexuality, which Lexi has already poked, goading him into storming out of her play.

But the chaotic control freak that is Nate Jacobs is always at the mercy of his bubbling testosterone, and with a public humiliation still fresh in his mind, he might do something spontaneous - he still has that pistol.

Is Kat still in this show?

Despite a strong start, with some of the most funny, memorable scenes at the beginning of this season, Kat’s story just kind of sputtered and stalled into nothing; at this point, she’s almost a background character.

Indeed, her presence in Lexi’s play was just as impactful as her role this season - will the finale see her do something interesting again?

Why is Samantha filming Maddy?

We all saw the security camera filming Maddy as she tries on Samantha’s clothes, and the babysitter subplot seems to have served no purpose whatsoever, other than to give Maddy new perspective on Cassie’s betrayal.

Obviously, something important is being foreshadowed and it seems sinister; Samantha seems to really like Maddy, and maybe even have an attraction to her.

Some fans interpreted her swimming pool scene as flirtatious, as she seems far too interested in the teenager - that camera must have been there for a reason.

What happened to McKay?

Despite playing a pretty prominent role in season one, McKay just wasn’t there this season, only appearing once as he and Cassie ended their relationship. It was hinted that Nate was jealous of McKay’s intimacy with Cassie, but that has never come up again - perhaps his role in the story is over, but maybe he has a part still to play in the twisted Nate love triangle.

We’ll have to wait and see, as Maddy and Cassie’s big feud is surely going to dominate the finale, as it has the entire season; Lexi’s play isn’t even over yet, and the drama is about to explode.

Whatever happens, there’ll surely be plenty of material left for season 3.
