Question of Sport night raises over £35,000 for the Sunshine Fund to help disabled children

A fun Question of Sport night has helped to raise more than £35,000 to help children with disabilities in the North East.

The annual quiz and dinner, in aid of The Chronicle Sunshine Fund, took place at The Grand Hotel Gosforth Park in Newcastle on November 24. The event last took place in 2019 and returned this year after the Covid pandemic.

It was hosted by Sky Sports presenter Pete Graves and usually attracts hundreds of sporting buffs from top organisations across the North East who hope to climb their way to the Question of Sport leaderboard and be crowed quiz champions. This year's event was sponsored by Lowes Financial Management, who are long-term supporters of the Sunshine Fund, having made charitable contributions for many years.

Despite the cost of living crisis, the quiz and dinner raised more than £35,000 for the charity, which helps to buy life-changing equipment for children with disabilities in the region. The specialist equipment provided through the Sunshine Fund is currently unavailable through the NHS and local services.

Big Purple Productions created and hosted the 2022 quiz and even some of the best sporting minds in the North East were challenged by the breadth of questions covering everything from local sporting knowledge to World Cup football and the Olympics. Host Pete Graves also contributed some tough questions that only a select few managed to answer correctly.

Newcastle Law firm Hay & Kilner were the 2019 champions. This year, Natwest was victorious on the night. As well as the main quiz, guests were entertained throughout the evening and dug deep to support the charity.

Siobhan Sargeant, Sunshine Fund director, said: "It was fantastic to bring our Question of Sport back to the North East for 2022 after a two-year break, and what a fantastic night it was. We were excited to welcome guests back to The Grand Hotel for a new version of the quiz created by Big Purple Events and hosted by our friend Pete Graves.

"Pete did a cracking job as always and as well as being our quiz master, he helped us raise over £35k for our charity at a time when donations are down and costs are sky rocketing, we consider this to be a fantastic achievement.

"Thanks to our partners Lowes for sponsoring this event, we couldn’t have done it without them. A huge congratulations to team Natwest for taking home the 2022 trophy."
