Queer crafters and pre-Parade glam-ups taking over Moore Street Market for Pride

A market in Dublin city centre will be celebrating Pride week with queer traders and performances - as well as helping parade-goers get their glam up.

From June 21 to June 24, Moore Street Market will be doing their first ever Pride-themed market. There will be stalls with "pride-themed and pride-branded bits and bobs" for anyone who wants to buy some independently made crafts from people from the LGBTQ+ community and from allies.

According to manager Christina Quill, about half of the traders on the Moore Street Market during Pride week will be queer, and the other half are all allies. Their pre-Pride party “Drag Yourself to Moore Street'' will be the highlight of the event.

Christina said: “Moore Street is obviously right around the corner from where the Pride Parade starts up by the Garden of Remembrance.

"So if people are in town early, and maybe they don't have anything to wear, or they want to get glammed up or they just want to get some badges to support the day, then they can come down to us. We have face painting and loads of people who are making badges, making jewellery, all inspired by Pride."

On the day of the Parade, there will be a DJ from 10am, a drag performance from 12pm, and a magician who will be doing tricks at the market before bringing his performance on stage. The whole event will be filmed with a 360 camera by Leo from Lollipop Apparel who has curated the whole event.

There will also be handcrafted soaps, gifts, herbal alternative smoking blends and imported rainbow-beaded jewellery handmade by Ecuadorian tribes.

ROSA International Socialist Feminists will also be there. Christina said: "They've done some great work over the years, I've seen the great work that they do. I saw them out on Henry Street last Saturday, canvassing for trans rights."

They will be at the market supporting and creating awareness for the situation for queer people in Ireland before they take part of the Pride march. Christina, who is queer herself said: "We all have to remember that Pride is a protest and it's not always about the commercialised version of what Pride has maybe become.

"We always have to ground it in what the real meaning is and the real meaning of Pride is [that it is] a way for to understand how things can be difficult for people in queer communities... And, we're not there yet.

"Pride is only one day but these difficulties are faced by people of the community every day. So we need to also draw attention to that."
