More than 130 years after it first started serving drinks in Far North Queensland, one of Australia's most iconic pubs has been listed for sale.
The Lions Den Hotel, south of Cooktown, is one of the oldest continuously operating hotels in Queensland.
Nestled along the bumpy Bloomfield Track that cuts through the Daintree Rainforest, the pub has long been on the bucket-list for adventure seekers in Cape York and still boasts the signatures – dating back to the 1800s – of thirsty tin miners on the walls and ceilings.
But owner Judy Fry, who recently turned 70, has decided to call last drinks.
"I don't want to sell it — I really love it, but I have to be realistic about it," she said.
"I love that it's not in a town — the people that come here are genuine people that like to come here to learn a little bit about the history and spend a few days.
"The building is still original, the floors are still original and the place still tells a story."
Time to tap out
Ms Fry, who has run the pub since 2005, said she had decided to sell because of her age.
"It's become a bit too much for me," she said.
The sale includes the pub, three hectares, a caravan park and camping grounds.
"I really hope whoever takes it on keeps the history going and keeps it the way it is," Ms Fry said.
Ms Fry says she will miss the colourful characters who drop by.
"I will really miss it but it's time to say goodbye," she said.
Harcourts International is selling the property.
Agent Shaun Bishop said the Lions Den was a "genuine slice of history with a loyal following".
