Central Queensland police have charged a 22-year-old woman with murder following the death of a toddler.

Emergency services were called to an address in the suburb of Frenchville in Rockhampton's north on January 18.

Police said a two-year-old boy was transported to the Rockhampton Hospital before being transferred to the Queensland Children's Hospital in Brisbane.

Authorities said the child died in hospital the following day and was known to the woman.

Detectives from the Rockhampton Child Protection and Investigation Unit and the Child Trauma Unit have launched an investigation into the child's death.

The Frenchville woman is expected to appear in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court later today.
