Queensland escapee recaptured after crash

An inmate is under police guard in hospital after he allegedly crashed a stolen car in Townsville. (AAP)

An inmate who escaped from a low-security jail in Queensland's north last weekend has been recaptured after allegedly crashing a stolen car.

Police say the 28-year-old was taken into custody after he became trapped in the vehicle when it left the road and ploughed into the front yard of a home in Townsville.

They say the car had been stolen from a nearby suburb shortly before the accident.

The man was freed from the wreckage and taken to Townsville University Hospital, where he remains under guard as investigations continue.

Police issued an alert last Sunday following the early-morning escape from Townsville Correctional Centre by 28-year-old Jamie Lee Roberts, who was serving time for assault.
