Queen's favourite takeaway revealed - and she sends footman to get it at Balmoral

The Queen can't get enough of a traditional British staple - and will always grab fish and chips whenever she fancies a takeaway at Balmoral.

Her Majesty's Scottish holiday home clearly isn't short of excellent local chippies, and when the mood takes her she will always enjoy the classic when she gets peckish.

She chooses one of the roughly £10 dishes from nearby town Ballater each time she places an order, instead of the gourmet dishes you might expect a royal to eat.

But it's not just when she is north of the border that fish and chips is on the menu for the monarch.

She likes it at Windsor, too - but prefers it cooked on site rather than getting the food specially sent in.

Speaking to Fabulous, a source said: “She occasionally treats herself to fish and chips when at Balmoral.

“A footman is despatched to get it from the local town of Ballater.”

A former chef to The Queen herself has explained the "refined" way Her Royal Highness requested fish and chips when she is back in England.

Darren McGrady says instead of cooking the fish by coating it in batter and deep-frying in lard or oil, Her Majesty likes it coated in breadcrumbs and baked.

He served as the Queen’s personal chef at Buckingham Palace between the 1980s to the 1990s and recalls many quirks about the royal pallet.

Chatting on his YouTube channel about her tastes, he said: "Fish fried in all that crispy rich batter was a little bit too much for her, she preferred a more refined fish and chips."

He also told The Telegraph she cannot be described as a “foodie”, unlike her late husband Prince Phillip, who "loves to eat and would stand and talk food all day".

When she is travelling the Queen is known to eat Dundee cake and be particular about the type of water she drinks - often requesting Malvern water was brought on board for use in her tea.

The Queen isn't the only royal who likes to tuck into a takeaway dish.

Prince William, 40, is a big fan of pizza, Chinese and Nandos.

His love for Nando's was so great he even told co-founder Robert Brozin, he was the chain's "biggest fan" after being introduced to it by his police protection officer, HELLO! reported.

While William's wife Kate told BBC Radio One in an interview with the BBC in 2017 that she likes curry for dinner.
