Queen's Park 1 Airdrie 1: Diamonds miss chance to close gap on Cove Rangers in League One title race

Airdrie missed the chance to gain ground on League One leaders Cove Rangers after being held to a 1-1 draw at Queen's Park.

A thumping strike from Charlie Fox fired Spiders in front but the Diamonds were level seconds later through Hearts loanee Scott McGill for his fourth goal of the season.

But the Diamonds will really be ruing Callum Smith's fist-half sitter at 1-1 when he fired wide from all of six yards.

Back-to-back draws means the Diamonds remain seven points behind leaders Cove Rangers - who were a held to a draw by Dumbarton - ahead of the top two meeting at Balmoral Stadium next week.

Queen's Park's difficult run continued as they have picked up just one win in their last 12 outings.

The sides had drawn three times during 90 minutes in their previous four meetings this season and just a solitary goal earned Airdrie victory in the other encounter, so it was no surprise to see another close affair at Firhill.

The Diamonds made one change from Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Clyde as skipper Callum Fordyce dropped to the bench and player/assistant manager Scott Agnew came into the starting 11.

And there was a solitary change for the Spiders as well, coincidentally from their draw with Clyde on their last outing the previous Saturday, as interim boss Peter Grant brought Louis Longridge back into the side in place of Luis Longstaff.

Inside three minutes Agnew almost opened the scoring for Airdrie direct from a corner kick. He whipped the ball into the near post and a deflection took the ball onto the underside of the crossbar before Spiders cleared the danger.

Spiders came close themselves after 10 minutes when Liam Brown did well to create space for a cross and picked out Longridge darting into the box, but he didn't get the connection he would have wanted on his volley and Max Currie was grateful to make a comfortable save.

The hosts enjoyed the best of the early stages and had a lot of joy down the right-hand side, but fortunately for Airdrie the final ball was sorely lacking.

In 27 minutes, though, Spiders produced a real bit of quality when a corner from the left broke to Fox and he rifled an unstoppable strike past Currie into the top left-hand corner to break the deadlock.

Spiders were worthy of the opener but they shot themselves in the foot just moments later as Airdrie found an immediate response. Callum Smith pinched possession from Celtic loanee Luca Connell inside the box and his cut back was slotted home by McGill to level the scores.

The Diamonds were much improved after their goal and right on the stroke of half-time the visiting support were left wondering how on earth they weren't in front after Callum Smith missed an absolute sitter.

Another defensive lapse from Queen's Park saw Frizzell win the ball and burst into the box. He laid the ball on a plate for Smith but he somehow slipped his effort wide of the post from six yards to keep the sides level at the break.

Thirty seconds after the re-start Smith had the opportunity to atone for his miss when McGill sent in through but Queen's Park keeper Calum Ferrie was out quickly to thwart him with his feet.

Again, though, Spiders had a lot of joy on the right hand side and peppered the Diamonds box with crosses, which were dealt with well by the visitors.

On the hour mark Ferrie got down superbly to turn a Rhys McCabe free-kick round the post as the visitors came close to edging in front.

McGill was replaced by Celtic loan star Brody Paterson and Jordan Allan came on for the ineffective Calum Gallagher as the Diamonds tried to change things up.

But there was little in the way of opportunities until the 89th minute when Jordan Allan hooked an effort wide.

The Diamonds are back in action next weekend when they face a huge top of the table clash at leaders Cove Rangers.
