The Crown – Netflix

What better way to start our list than this seismic ratings-winner?

Chronicling the life of Her Majesty decade by decade, the show starts slap bang at the beginning in 1952 with her ascension to the throne.

The latest series of this first-rate historical drama had Olivia Colman doing her best to disentangle the marriage woes of Charles and Diana, along with navigating a tricky relationship with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Fans will be eager to see Imelda Staunton take the magisterial reins when season five comes out in November.

The King's Speech – Netflix

Heart-warming and fond portrayal of the Queen's father King George VI, this enormously popular movie went on to scoop four Academy Awards.

Starring Colin Firth, The King’s Speech tells the tale of a family man who never expected to be King, but picks up the mantle following his brother David's abdication.

Struggling with a stammer since being a young boy, this charming story follows George's blossoming friendship with his speech therapist, Lionel Logue, as he prepares to give his first ever radio broadcast. A quality production that ticks all the boxes this jubilee weekend.

The Windsors (Netflix)

The Windsors - Netflix

This disarming, tongue-in-cheek romp pokes a light-hearted sovereign sceptre at the Royal family.

The Windsors deftly turns the likes of Prince Charle s, Prince Harry and the Duchess of Cornwall into caricatures of themselves – often with laugh-out-loud results.

Its stories are completely fictional but, of course, inspired by real-life events.

Low budget, rude, and crude, there are two seasons of this currently available on Netflix. Well worth a titter this coming weekend.

The Royal House of Windsor (Netflix)

The Royal House of Windsor - Netflix

Markedly different in tone from the madcap The Windsors, this all together more sober offering documents key moments in the royal family's history from the time of the Queen's grandfather, King George V.

Told in six parts, the first episode delves into how the King rescued the monarchy, and follows the events that lead to King Edward VIII's abdication.

We also get to learn of Prince Philip's moves to modernise the royal family, the widening-rift between Princess Diana and Prince Charles, and his friendship with Lord Mountbatten.

Jeanna de Waal in Diana: The Musical (Netflix)

Diana: The Musical - Netflix

With a lacklustre 4.2 out of 10 on IMDB, you could be forgiven for wondering why we’re even mentioning this. But love it or hate it, Diana: The Musical certainly got tongues wagging upon its release last year.

Engaged to a prince she hardly knows, 19-year-old Diana is suddenly thrust into the spotlight, rapidly becoming the most famous woman in the world. Strong material for a musical, perhaps?

It may have an unlikely premise – essentially a musical version of Diana’s turbulent life – but that’s not to say some did not enjoy it. Could you be one of those people? Stars Jeanna de Waal in the lead role.

Emily Blunt stars in The Young Victoria (Disney Plus)

The Young Victoria - Disney+

Emily Blunt works hard to capture the innocence of the young Victoria, as she ascends to the throne at just 18, with her darling Prince Albert by her side.

An engrossing look into the royal's difficult childhood, her early years as Queen and her fraught relationship with her mother, The Young Victoria received some criticism for being somewhat leisurely in pace. But that gives you more time to drink it all in, particularly when the opulence on show is so breathtaking. Rupert Friend and Miranda Richardson also star.

Naomi Watts stars in Diana (Amazon Prime)

Diana - Amazon Prime Video

This insightful documentary stars Naomi Watts and follows the last two years of the Princess's life as she dispenses with husband Charles and explores her relationship with heart and lung surgeon Hasnat Khan.

Of course, no Diana documentary would be complete without mentioning the intense level of media scrutiny in her life, which is all present and correct here. But this biopic also touches upon how the princess knew how to play the game when suited.

An unflinching look that divides opinion, but all in all a convincingly told tale.
