Queen's funeral to be show on big screens at Nottinghamshire cinemas

Cinemas in Nottinghamshire will be screening the Queen's funeral on Monday, September 19. Arc Cinemas in Station Road, Beeston, and High Street, Hucknall will be showing the event for free.

But anyone hoping to get a seat will be disappointed as all the places were quickly snapped up as soon as the screenings were placed online.

The cinemas, known for pushing the boat out for new blockbuster releases with the iconic Ecto 1 Ghostbusters' car, a Batmobile for the new Batman movie and even a replica Top Gun fighter jet cockpit, will have a more sombre tone for one of the biggest moments in history. The day has been declared a bank holiday to give people the chance to watch the service and pay their respects.

Marketing manager Mark Gallagher said: "We think this could be a beautiful coming-together of the community. There might be people alone who want to share the moment with others, people who might be sat in a cold house or people who might just want to remember this moment of history and watch the funeral on a giant screen with like-minded people."

Both cinemas will be opening early specially for the funeral, which will be televised around the world. The funeral is expected to be attended by 2,000 people including heads of state and senior politicians from other countries.

The service at Westminster Abbey in London will take place at 11am. A second, committal service will be held at St George's Chapel in Windsor, which will also be televised.

Nothing else will be screened at the cinema at the same time and normal service will resume around 2pm.

Mr Gallagher said: We were full at both Beeston and Hucknall before bedtime. We’re looking into getting it on another screen but not sure the technology will allow it."
