The Queen’s dresser and confidante faces an uncertain future with King Charles on the throne, it has been claimed.
Angela Kelly, 69, started working for the late Queen in 1993 after a chance meeting when she was a housekeeper for Sir Christopher Mallaby, the then British ambassador to Germany.
Elizabeth and Prince Philip had met her during a visit to Berlin and got chatting, with Angela telling the pair of her plans to one day return to Britain.
In 1993 Angela - nicknamed AK47 after her temper - received a phone call offering her a job as dresser and went on to form a close bond with the beloved sovereign, with the pair often exchanging stories of their grandchildren.
The divorced mother of three went on to earn the impressive title of Her Majesty’s Personal Advisor and Curator, and even cut the hair of her employer during lockdown.
With the death of her employer earlier this month her position is under threat as King Charles is not believed to be as big a fan of Angela as his mother was, claims royal expert Richard Kay writing for the Mail Online.
Charles is believed to have concerns over the number of books Angela has had published - with the Queen’s blessing - which were mainly based on the Queen's wardrobe but also included behind the scenes pictures. A third book is also believed to be in the works
A source said: “His concerns were solely about protecting both the dignity of the Queen and the Crown.
“Nothing has changed with his mother’s death. If anything, he is more determined to defend her reputation and her legacy.”
Days after the death of the Queen it was revealed around 20 members of royal household staff were told their jobs could be at risk.
Around 100 workers at Clarence House are also at risk.
Camilla, the Queen Consort, already has a dresser whom she inherited from the Queen Mother, meaning there is no job there.
Despite changes in the royal household, the Queen is said to have approved a long-term deal for her dresser to stay on in her home close to Windsor Castle - possibly for life - as a reward for her many years as the monarch's right-hand woman.
In a rare interview with the Telegraph in 2007, Angela said: "We are two typical women. We discuss clothes, make-up and jewellery.
“We say, 'Would this piece of jewellery look nice with that outfit?', and things like that."
Earlier this week Angela was among the mourners who arrived for the Queen’s funeral at Westminster Abbey.
During her long time working with the Queen she was appointed a Member of the Royal Victorian Order in 2006 and in 2014 she was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Version of the Royal Household Long and Faithful Service Medal in 2014 for 20 years of service to the royal family.
Aside from working for the Queen, Kelly runs a fashion label which she founded with Alison Pordum, the Queen’s former in-house dressmaker.
