Queen postpones engagements for second time this week following Covid diagnosis

The Queen has postponed two virtual audiences that were planned for today in the wake of her Covid diagnosis, Buckingham Palace has said.

It is the second time this week she has postponed virtual engagements since the news she tested positive for the virus on Sunday.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “The two virtual audiences that had previously been scheduled to take place today will now be rescheduled for a later date.

“Her Majesty is continuing with light duties. No other engagements are scheduled for this week.”

On Tuesday, she was also forced to cancel two planned engagements due to be held on video link after feeling under the weather.

However, Buckingham Palace confirmed last night that she managed today to hold her weekly audience with the Prime Minister Boris Johnson by phone.

The 95-year-old monarch is continuing to experience mild cold-like symptoms after testing positive for coronavirus and has been self-isolating at Windsor Castle.

A number of palace staff who work and care for Her Majesty are also understood to have been hit by the virus in the last few days.

Concerns for the nation’s longest reigning monarch have been heightened in recent days, given her age and recent health scares, including an overnight stay in hospital last October to undergo a series of tests and a back sprain the following month.

Buckingham Palace had insisted the Queen, who is triple vaccinated, would this week be continuing light duties at her desk.

And just hours after testing positive, she signed off a message to the Team GB Men’s and Women’s Curling teams, following their success at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games and the next day issued a message of condolence to the Brazilian president over flooding in his country.

The Queen last carried out an in-person engagement at Windsor Castle last week, meeting the incoming Defence Services Secretary Major General Eldon Millar and his predecessor Rear Admiral James Macleod.

However many royal watchers were concerned when she was overheard saying she couldn't move in footage from the engagement.

The monarch could be heard remarking loudly: “Oh. I’m here! I thought you might have just stayed in there for ages. Good morning.”

Asked how she was, the smiling Queen, wearing a floral dress and holding a walking stick, pointed to her left leg or foot and responded: “Well as you can see I can’t move.”

However, the Queen has a run of high-profile engagements coming up.

She is set to host the Diplomatic Reception on March 2, where she will meet hundreds of members of the Diplomatic Corps at Windsor.

The Queen is also due to attend the Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey on March 14, and then the Duke of Edinburgh’s memorial service, also at the Abbey, on March 29.
