Queen of the South boss salutes players - and slams supporters - after Montrose win

Player boss Wullie Gibson saluted his Queens’ side’s win then slammed their supporters for failing to fully back the team.

The South slaughtered Montrose 4-0 at the weekend in a convincing show with 10 men at Palmerston but the tannoy announcer was forced to play music at sporadic intervals to try and gee up the fans and spark them into life.

Gibson described it as the Doonhamers’ best display since he took charge and said: “Taking a lot of things into account, going down to 10 men and seeing the game out the way we did and keeping a clean sheet is very pleasing.

“But we have performed like that on numerous occasions and it has not just been consistent enough.”

He added of the crowd: “I was actually quite disappointed with the home support today, I’ll not lie.

“You’ve got the tannoy having to play fake music because the atmosphere was flat. You’re winning 4-0, they’re not happy when you’re getting beat.

“All I ask is for them to get behind the team and show their support and be that extra man at times because we’re a young squad. I know we’ve been up and down but it’s a big help if they just rally round and get behind the boys.

“I don’t care what they think about me, if they think I am not the right man, the wrong man, too early, whatever. I’ve got the job, it’s my job to get the best out of the players. We are working as hard as possible.

“The boys have taken a lot of criticism and I have taken a lot of criticism personally (from the Alloa result) and we lost the game last week in a five-minute spell. No one can say to me that we didn’t play well in the first half last week. We didn’t score a second when we were on top. Three goals in quick succession cost us. We were good for 60 minutes but 60 minutes doesn’t win you games. This was a good win against a good team today.

“Now people will probably argue with us and say that Montrose were rubbish and say this, that and the next thing but we made them look that way with the way we played, the way we scored when we were on top and the way we kept driving forward and the way we took our chances.

“But again the challenge is next week because I think we’ve only won back-to-back games once so it’s not consistent enough and that’s the challenge.”

Gibson added: “The boys have not been in as long in a week as they were this week. We analysed things. We worked them harder, we drilled them longer and we went through certain things that we thought we needed to because we knew Montrose were going to be physical and direct.”
