Queen of the South and Dumfries and Galloway College are preparing to kick off a new course in March.
The innovative “Sports and Recreation Skills for Work” class will offer students a glimpse behind the scenes of running a football club and essential sports skills.
Running for 12 weeks between March and June, the programme will also provide students with the opportunity to take part in match day activities in and around Palmerston.
The club’s commercial manager, Dan Armstrong, said: “It is great to have a further partnership with the college and it’s a further strand to what we as a football club can offer to our community.
“This will build confidence for young people and get them in a practical environment where they can learn to work behind the scenes of a football club.
“It’ll look at facility management, health and safety, first aid, taking on the breakfast club and leading on coaching sessions.
“That’s where a lot of the assessments will come in they will be practical assessments.
“So hopefully it suits people that aren’t as comfortable writing theory or in a test environment but prefer to be hands-on and learn practically.”
Students will leave the course with a SQA National 5 qualification and will be equipped with the skills and unique experience required to build a career in the sports industry or progress into further study.
Douglas Dickson, the vice principal at the college, said: “We see this as a ground-breaking opportunity as a college being able to work with a community partner and we’re glad Queen of the South asked us to get involved. I’d like to thank them and our staff for working to create this opportunity.”
“I would encourage anyone who is interested in taking advantage of this unique opportunity to get in touch with us to find out more.”
